Christmas in Sri Lanka has a long and rich tradition and is widely celebrated with festivities kicking off in style at dawn on 1st of December, when locals let off fireworks to mark the start of the season. From this point on, there is so much happening in the lead up to Christmas Day, with families gathering, the preparation of Christmas cake (made here with local aromatic spices and preserves of ginger, pumpkin and chow-chow) and mince pies, the hanging of twinkling lights and decorations and street markets with live music and delicious street food.
