Mount Aso is an active volcano at the centre of Kyushu island. The volcano’s crater, at 100km in circumference, is the largest in Japan and one of the biggest in the world. Soaring nearly 1,600 metres above sea level, the craggy peaks dominate the surrounding countryside and provide impressive panoramic views.
The main crater, with its bubbling, fuming, turquoise lake can often be accessed and viewed by tourists the crater rim can often be closed if due to dangerous levels of volcanic gasses. Regardless of whether you get to peer into the hellish landscape or not, the mountain is an impressive site from any angle
