Koyasan

Set amongst the valleys and forests of holy Koyasan are a huge number of monasteries, temples and shrines, all clustered around Kongobu-ji, the headquarters of the Shingon school of Buddhism, founded in the 9^th century. This isolated, atmospheric valley is encircled by eight towering peaks, said to resemble an auspicious lotus flower. This is a place to savour the tranquillity, the beauty of nature and spectacular views as you explore some of the main holy temples and sites – wander through Okunoin, a vast cemetery of 200,000 stupas, to the mystical Hall of Lanterns hosts 10,000 oil lamps that are kept permanently lit.
