UNESCO-World Heritage listed and considered the greatest example of a European-built fortified city in South Asia, Galle’s magnificent fort was begun by the Portuguese, strengthened by the Dutch and finally taken over by the British. With so much turbulent history, it is a fascinating place to explore. Walking on the old walls is a great way to get a bird’s eye view, whilst some of the old gates remain intact. Within the walls the narrow streets are lined with old Dutch and British architecture and plenty of lazy cafes.
