History & Culture

History & Culture

Between the towering Himalayas and Kerala’s beach fringed tip, there’s millennias worth of history to discover on a holiday in India. Civilisations rose in the Indus valley over 5,000 years ago and the great empires that have risen and fallen in that time have left impressive reminders of their wake. Considered the birthplace of some of the world’s major religions, the diverse characteristics of India’s culture are evident as you explore its different regions. Festivals hold great significance in India, especially the Holi Festival, a joyous occasion with singing, dancing as powder dye in vibrant colours is thrown on participants symbolising new life

Natural wonders

Natural wonders

India’s landscape is as diverse as its people and ranges from tropical beach paradises to primary forests of teak; to desert tundra’s broken by forts ruled by princes; and to chilly foothills clad in tea plantations opening onto vistas of the world’s highest mountain peaks. India’s wildlife draws visitors from far and wide with hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles and birds found in Ranthambore National Park alone. It is here that you may also spot the beautiful Bengal Tiger.

Culinary delights

Culinary delights

India is a kaleidoscope of cultures, and the food perfectly reflects this. Each region boasts its own delicious speciality so prepare for a deeply satisfying culinary journey. Whether you are sampling incredible street food in Mumbai, the freshest of grilled fish in Kerala or mouth-watering dosa in Tamil Nadu your tastebuds and senses will come alive.

Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is, simply, as breathtaking as the stories say. India’s most iconic building, a monument to love, and mausoleum to a favourite wife, the Taj Mahal is built entirely from white marble, its exquisite symmetry mirrored only by the reflecting pool that runs down the centre of its gardens.

Wonderful Experiences in India

Useful and Interesting

India Travel Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 based on 5798 reviews

Review for Inspiring India
This was a superbly organised holiday, which gave us a great introduction to the Northern part of India. Major pluses for us were the pacing of the tour, the generally high quality of the hotels and the fact that all our meals were included. We were delighted and impressed with the sites we visited, including temples, forts and other monuments, and enjoyed two exciting safari trips during which we saw tigers. It was also fascinating to explore the street markets of Bundi and be able to watch parades for the Hindu festival of Holi. Seeing the Taj Mahal was the experience of a lifetime.
Our guide, Jasvir, was very good - friendly, informative and considerate. He timed a number of visits to ensure that we avoided the hottest parts of the day and the biggest crowds, where possible. Our group was small (14) but this was beneficial because it meant that we got to know each other and bonded really well. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone thinking of visiting India for the first time.

Review for Inspiring India
From their efficiency in dealing with the closure of Heathrow on the day of departure to my return Wendy Wu were brilliant. Good standard of hotels which ranged from modern to more traditional. Exceptional guide who adjusted the itinerary to allow us to cope with the heat and was an absolute fountain of knowledge in both Indian history and present day. Good split between traditional sights and experiences. Thoroughly recommend.

Review for Inspiring India
Great trip. Well organized and thoroughly enjoyable. A lot of travel but you know that when you book and it's not really a hardship. Our guide Jazmir was brilliant - knowledgeable, funny and patient. A trip well worth doing

Review for Inspiring India
Terrific holiday. We got caught up in the afternoon effects of the Heathrow fire but Wendy Wu staff were fantastic and managed to get us out only 1 day late. It's full on with a lot of travel but you know that when you book, hotels were great and everything was well organized. Our guide, Jazmir, was brilliant - knowledgeable, patient and funny.

Review for Christmas in India
I loved India, fascinating country despite the poverty & pollution. Such an interesting culture & people, welcomed everywhere we went with big smiles. The people dress in such fabulous colours & styles, it’s wonderful to see.
Our guide, driver & co pilot were excellent I couldn’t fault their attention to detail. They went the extra mile to make our Xmas experience the best. Our visit to Rathambore National Park was one of the highlights, when we got to see two female Bengal Tigers. Also loved Bundi which is off the main tourist route, so for me it was authentic & few tourists there.
All in all, a great way to spend Christmas.
I was ready for vegetables, when I got home & a while before I eat curry. However I go away to experience another culture not what I have at home.

Booking Experience for Inspiring India
Absolutely wonderful. Every meal was a banquet and busses were on time for every outing. The hotels were great Loved the itinerary and all our outings Really well organised. Better than I had expected in every way. Our tour director was extremely efficient and thought of every eventuality, sorting out a few errors which we, the group, created. He looked after one of our less mobile members of the group above and beyond the call of duty.

Review for Inspiring India
An extraordinary glimpse of this huge country. I’ll remember the chaos and noise; the colours and smiles; the Mughals and their artistry shown in their palaces and forts; the tigers and bears of Rathnambore NP and the exquisite Taj Mahal. It was a true assault on all the senses.

FAQ about Holidays in India

  • The best time to visit India is from October to March. Each season offers a different climate depending on where in India you are visiting. During May to September, the weather can be quite hot and humid as well as in monsoon season which is June to September. During the winter months of November to January, the temperatures can drop and the weather can become cooler. Read more about when to visit India

  • The food offered on all of our India tours is locally sourced cuisine so that you can get a real taste for authentic ingredients and recipes, especially spices! Local delicacies from markets can also be tried as well as street food from places like Delhi. On request, western food is easily available. India is the ultimate foodie country and each city offers its own significant dish and a different range of flavours, textures and ingredients. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are in abundance with a huge choice for other dietary requirements as well.

    Did you find this helpful?

  • India is now an extremely diverse place and most types of clothing are not restricted, however, women are expected to cover up when visiting places of religious significance like temples. Items such as knee length skirts and shorts are suitable for women (and shorts for men) and these types of clothes are widely accepted. It is always recommended to carry a light cardigan/shawl/pashmina when travelling as well as shoes that are easy to take on and off such as flip flops to be prepared to enter a religious building (some sites will require you to enter bare foot).

  • The local currency is Rupees which is a closed currency. It is best to either take AUD or USD in cash to change once you arrive in India, or to withdraw money from an ATM once you arrive in India (charges may apply). Smaller denominations are recommended for taxis, rickshaws, tipping and comfort breaks etc.

    Did you find this helpful?

  • This is highly dependent on where you are travelling to, but distances could vary from 2 – 4 hours. Traffic is extremely busy in a lot of areas of India but on our tours we will always try to travel outside peak times.
